This tiny spring can lose consistency as it is vulnerable to changes in weather and climate and can wear out with extensive use.

President Obama and Men’s Watches: His Quirky Style

President Obama is the man. He’s always on point and entertaining to watch and listen to whether he’s giving a press conference or appearing on a popular talk show like he did last night on the “Late Show” with Dave Letterman.

Although Obama has been on the “Late Show” five times before, this was his first appearance since becoming President, therefore everyone was tuned in to see what he would say and do. Of course he was cool and personable and I’m sure Letterman received some good ratings.

The public doesn’t just like to see and hear what Obama says and does; they also want to talk about and analyze what he wears. When it comes to what the President wears during his normal work day and frequent media appearances, it’s pretty much a standard outfit: dark suit, white shirt, blue tie and American flag pin on his lapel. The one way for him to make a fashion statement and express himself is by wearing a watch. President Obama is known to have a couple different men’s watches: a Rolex, a TAG Heuer and a Jorg Gray.

Each of these men’s watches makes a different statement: a Rolex is a Rolex, one of the most expensive brands of luxury watches ever, and the one which he was seen wearing when he was running for President. Ironically, or not, his then “competition” John McCain also wore a Rolex.

When still a Senator, Obama religiously wore a TAG Heuer Series 1500 Divers watch. This was his daily watch for about ten years and one which he still wears. TAG Heuer produces many sporty men’s watches that are not out of reach for the average American to own.

The Jorg Gray watch that Obama has also shown much loyalty to has received the most attention because before he wore it, no one had heard of it. Last night on the “Late Show” one could see that he was wearing a large sized watch but which one was it? People are tweeting that it was an Omega watch, or maybe a Rolex? My guess is that it was not a Rolex, as most men’s watches by Rolex seem to have a metal bracelet and the one he wore has a dark leather strap. Unless the President has recently gone out and bought an Omega watch, likelihood is, that it was either his trusty TAG or his often worn Jorg Gray.

With all this talk about what kind of men’s watch the President wears, what no one seems to be talking about is which hand he wears it on? Most people are right-handed so it’s common to see watches worn on left-hands, but as you may have noticed, Obama is left-handed, which would normally mean that he wears his watch on his right hand, but he doesn’t… he wears his watch on his left hand. A total quirk and something else that he will go down for aside from being one of the best Presidents this country as ever seen.

TAG Heuer and Breitling Launch New Mens Watches

Both TAG Heuer and Breitling are well known luxury watch brands that have been around for over 100 years. Known especially for producing high precision sports watches and chronographs, these brands are constantly inventing and releasing new mechanisms and models that continue to please their fans and raise the bar of watchmaking.

Breitling has been manufacturing watches since 1884. Originally created for aviation pilots, Breitling watches are unmatched when it comes to precision time keeping, functionality and quality that can withstand harsh conditions and high pressure.

As Breitling gears up for its 125th anniversary, a new watch will hit the scenes. The Cosmonaute is a new watch based on an “oldie but goodie”. The original Cosmonaute made international headlines and became a part of history when it was worn on the wrist of American astronaut Scott Carpenter when he made a successful trip to space in May of 1962. Breitling crafted the Cosmonaute to be capable of indicating 24 hours in one single sweep of the dial, because in space there is no distinction between day and night. The new version of the Cosmonaute will retain this feature as well as the iconic 60′s design. 1,000 of these new Cosmonaute watches will be produced.

Also on the forefront of watchmaking is TAG Heuer, who known for its “Swiss avant-garde” approach to watchmaking, has been creating a strong brand of sports watches and chronographs since 1860.

Like Breitling, TAG Heuer also is launching a new version of an older watch, but this time, it does something the older version never did, nor can any other watch in the world do.

The TAG Heuer Monaco V4 watch has been in the works for five years and will make its debut in November of this year and coincides with the 150th anniversary of the company.

The Monaco collection of men’s and women’s watches by TAG has been popular since one was worn by Steve McQueen in the classic 1971 race car film “Le Mans.”

The Monaco V4 debuts as the world’s first mechanical watch with a “belt-driven movement and linear winding mass.” This watch will be produced in a very limited edition of only 150 pieces.

The Monaco V4 puts TAG Heuer down in the book of watchmaking history because it does what no other watch company has, which is a complete replacement of the usual gears and pinions used in mechanical movements. The gears and pinions typically used have been replaced with belt drives and ball bearings. Each belt, of which there are five, measure as big as a human hair, making the integration and functioning of them seem almost impossible, but TAG does it.

The typical centralized circular rotor winding system has also been completely replaced, this time with a linear winding mass. For this innovative development work TAG Heuer received two global patents.

Each of the 150 Monaco V4 watches is hand assembled, are cased in platinum, measure 40.5mm and are expected to sell for around ,614.56.

While coming up with an idea for this article I came across a watch I have never seen: Cartier Roadster Women’s Watch, model W62053V3. This watch comes with a “sky blue” sunray dial as well as in an orange version. The white satin strap, almost canvas looking, is different from anything I have seen. We all know that the Roadster is one of Cartier’s best known collections, but when it comes to women’s watches, I really had never seen this particular one. It must have been made in a very limited edition.

Limited edition watches are ones that watch manufacturers release to celebrate or commemorate a certain event or partnership, or they use these collections as ways to re-invent a watch that has already been created.

The concept gives it an air of exclusivity and for watch a collector, buying a limited edition watch is a real way to add value to one’s collection.

From TAG Heuer and Omega Watches, to Bvlgari, Movado and Cartier watches, all luxury watch brands release limited edition collections.

Omega has made many special edition watches. So, it’s especially note worthy to mention that Bvlgari took its classic Diagono and made a special edition watch branded with FIFA: Fédération Internationale de Football Association (French for International Federation of Association Football) which is not football as we Americans think of it, but rather soccer. FIFA is an international organization that governs soccer’s major tournaments. In other words, FIFA is like God in the eyes of soccer fanatics. The official name of this special watch is Bvlgari Diagono Limited Edition Acqua Men’s Watch, model number SC38WSV/SLN.FIFA.

TAG Heuer is known, among other things, for partnering with luxury car manufacturers like Mercedes Benz and Porsche. Over the years, TAG and Mercedes have come out with numerous special edition watches, one being the Tag Heuer Men’s SLR Mercedez-Benz Watch, model CAG2110.FC6209. This is a powerful looking watch that features SLR on the bezel and the Mercedes Benz name and emblem on the watch dial.

Movado is another brand that has, over its existence, produced many watches and has done special edition pieces with artists as well as produce watches that celebrate the company. For example, to celebrate 125 years in business, Movado came out with a man’s watch called the Movado M125 Anniversary Men’s Watch, model 0605819. This watch is also special because it varies slightly from the signature Movado look of no hands and a single dot at the 12 o’clock position.
