What Women Want: Men’s Watches

Many luxury watch companies have started to re-think how they produce women’s watches. In the past couple of years, style and fashion trends have changed, and women have opted for larger watches, causing the popularity and sales of smaller sized women’s watches to fall.

Many luxury watch brands have either started to market their men’s watches to women, or are adding female touches like extra design detail and precious stones to already popular men’s watches. Take Rolex for example, they have just released a new Rolex Datejust with pastel-shaded dial in a 36mm man size, with or without diamonds. Kate Hudson has been spotted wearing it. Patek Philippe is another company that has remodeled a popular man’s watch, in this case the Nautilus, to have a slightly softer shape, hoping to appeal to women.

Some watch brands may have thought that they would lose market share by not creating lines and collections just for women, but these days, it seems as though they’re the hot brands. Take Panerai for example. This Italian watch company has been around since 1860 and has never veered far from the four or five basic models of watches it produces. Panerai watches are simple in design, most known for the oversized faces, no fancy stuff like diamonds found anywhere. Panerai has always only made men’s watches, but watch (notice the play on words); women are going to start snatching these up, especially because Panerai watches are now more available in the U.S. than ever before and have recently come out with less expensive versions.

IWC is another watch brand that since its founding in 1868, has always just produced men’s watches. Although masculine in design, many IWC collections, specifically the Big Pilots and the Ingenieur lines, have retained a loyal following, including women who like strong looking men’s watches.

Another new trend among luxury watches, this one perhaps more dictated by consumers’ tighter purse strings than anything else, is the drop off in demand for watches that have lots of “bling.” Naturally, the more diamonds or other precious stones that a watch has, the more expensive it is. The price of metals has a lot to do with how brands need to price their watches, so if the price of stainless steel has gone up, then the price of an all stainless steel watch has to reflect that. Right now, the price of gold has sky-rocketed, to the point where “gold buyers” have popped up on every street corner it seems. Hence, another trend which is commonly found in men’s watches, but which women have gravitated to, is those larger, sportier watches that come with black rubber straps. Personally, I love this look on a woman, which is why classic men’s sport’s watches like the Bvlgari Diagono have never and will never go out of style.

In fact, this black rubber look has become so hot that the use of hi-tech materials such as ceramics, titanium, carbon fiber and PVD coating are rising in popularity. Although so common now, Hublot was the first company to produce a black rubber strap as seen in a luxury watch. Although by no means inexpensive, the Big Bang by Hublot has been a coveted watch by those who can afford it for years. The Big Bang comes in both a men’s and women’s version.

So, it’s really quite simple to answer the age-old question: what do women want? When it comes to watches, the answer is: a man’s watch. If you’re a man, be prepared to hand yours over.

Rolex was founded in 1908 by Hans Wilsdorf in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland.  Over the years, Rolex has become an iconic watch brand known for its high precision, handcrafted quality and superior watch design.  The Rolex Submariner is one of the top watches produced by Rolex and is considered by many to be the king of all luxury dive watches.

The Rolex Submariner was first brought to the public in 1954 at the Swiss Watch Fair.  The watch was primarily designed for divers and is known for its ability to resist extreme conditions.  The Rolex Submariner has been well tested over the years.  The watch has been taken on many sea and land expeditions by explorers where it has successfully performed in extreme cold and repeated underwater use.

The Rolex Submariner has been modified and improved upon since its inception in 1954.  The Submariner has been updated over the years with improved water resistance to 300 meters or 1000 feet, a date complication, new watch movements, as well as some changes in the appearance of the watch.

The newest Rolex Submariner models are available in all stainless steel, in two tone steel and yellow gold, in all yellow gold and in white gold.  The watches are produced with either a blue, black, or green watch dial and bezel.  Additionally, some Rolex Submariner models have a Serti dial which is basically a dial with diamonds or gemstones as the markers.

The latest version of the Submariner features watch hands and markers that are somewhat larger than the previous models.  Additionally, the hands and markers are covered with a SuperLuminova coating so that they will glow blue in the dark.

The Submariner features a unidirectional bezel that allows an underwater diver to see an accurate indication of diving time.  The bezel is made of cerachrome, which is an extremely hard ceramic material.  The Submariner bezel is corrosion-resistant, practically scratch proof, and retains its color over time.  Since the bezel is so hard, Rolex must carve the numerals and markers on the bezel before it completely hardens.  The Submariner bezel has a diameter of 40mm.

Rolex invented the Triplock winding crown to ensure that watches such as the Rolex Submariner are waterproof to 300 meters.  The Triplock winding crown uses a triple-seal system along with a slightly larger than normal screw down crown to protect the watch movement.

The new Rolex Submariner watch models feature a new watch bracelet clasp.  The Rolex Glidelock clasp is an improved clasp design that has a solid clasp that can be adjusted by simply sliding the adjustment pin forward or backward.  The watch bracelet can be incrementally increased in size up to 21mm in this manner.

When people hear the word “Tissot” they may not immediately recognize it as a watch brand, but that it is. Tissot was founded in 1853 by Charles-Felicien Tissot and his son Charles-Emile who set up shop in Switzerland.

In the first year of its existence, Tissot created the first mass-produced pocket watch and the first pocket watch that showed two different time zones. In 1929, the company introduced the first anti-magnetic watch.

Tissot has been known to make watches out of bizarre materials such as plastic and wood. In 1971 the company produced an all plastic watch called the IDEA 2201. In 1985 they came out with an all stone one called Alpine Granite Rock watch, an all mother of pearl piece in 1987 and one made entirely of wood, aptly called the Wood Watch in 1988.

It is common practice among watch brands to partner with and sponsor events that draw the same type of customer as the watch brand itself does. Tissot, being a maker of high-precision sports watches has since 2005, partnered with NASCAR to be the Official Timekeeper and Official Watch of this all ‘American car racing series. Tissot has long been involved with motor racing and promises to continue bettering the experience for the 75 million fans that watch NASCAR on TV and the 6 million that attend live races. As part of this partnership Tissot has created a series of seven special NASCAR watches including: the T-Touch NASCAR, the T-Race NASCAR, the T-Tracx NASCAR, and the PR 50 Chronograph NASCAR among others.
